The house is someone else’s now. But the day is still yours.
Your bags are packed. Your flight is hours away. Don’t waste it staring at a suitcase.
WORK BACKWARD FROM YOUR FLIGHT
Six hours. It may sound like plenty, but don’t get complacent. Before you drive away, subtract the hours you’ll need: driving time, gas, a rental car return, security.
Build in more cushion than feels necessary, especially on a weekend when Destin-Fort Walton Beach or Panama City Beach traffic decides to test you. This is not the day for cutting it close.
PICK A DIRECTION AND STICK WITH IT
Flying out of Northwest Florida Beaches International? Stay east. Headed out through Destin-Fort Walton Beach? Drift west. Either way: keep moving toward the airport. Skip the “one last stop” on the wrong side of 30A. It’s never worth it.
DECIDE: CLEAN OR SANDY?
Okay, time to make a real decision. Is it brunch, shopping, and a stroll through town? None of it requires a change of clothes afterward.
Or is it the beach? Think through rinsing off, storing wet stuff, and not hauling sand into a car that’s already full of luggage. Pick one before you leave the driveway.
HOW TO FILL THE TIME
● Long brunch, short walk. Zero wardrobe changes.
● One walkable town: Seaside, Rosemary Beach, wherever’s on the way. Coffee, a shop, a few photos.
● Scenic drive if the kids need a nap and you need a few quiet minutes.
● Quick beach walk if the flight’s late enough and you’re already dressed for it. Walk the shoreline, skip the swim.
IF YOU ONLY HAVE A FEW HOURS
2-3 hours: Brunch in the direction of the airport, then go.
4-5 hours: One walkable town, lunch, coffee, rental return.
6+ hours: Breakfast, one real stop, a relaxed lunch, then start easing toward the airport.
HANDLE YOUR LUGGAGE LIKE A PRO
Keep luggage out of sight. A smash-and-grab is a rough way to end a vacation. Documents, medication, and snacks go somewhere reachable, not buried in the trunk. And pack wet stuff separately, unless you want the whole flight home to smell like a damp swimsuit.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Don’t drive 45 minutes for one activity. Or cram in five stops instead of one. Don’t assume traffic will cooperate. And if “five more minutes” at the beach happens a third time, the morning’s gone.
Instead? These hours can be very pleasant. One good activity, one easy meal, a slow drift toward the airport. That’s the whole plan.
Where you stay decides how smoothly this goes. Oversee homes near the beach, and the good restaurants, make the exit as easy as the arrival.
