The art of nature. The nature of art. Grayton Beach has beautiful beaches, of course, but the village has a character all its own, shaped by beach cottages, local art, unique places to eat and sip, and a delightfully independent streak. Part bohemian, part natural beauty, it’s one of 30A’s oldest and most distinctive communities. Grayton marches to its own drum. Probably a drum made from a recycled crab trap.

LOCATION, LOCATION, PERFECTION

Between Blue Mountain Beach and Seaside, Grayton’s historic village is largely surrounded by Grayton Beach State Park. Nearby Western Lake adds to the natural appeal, and local fishing charters launch directly from the beach. Lots of water, wildlife, and enough natural beauty to make your phone storage nervous.

GOOD EYE, SWEET BUY

Around 1900, Grayton was vying to become a vacation favorite for families from Northwest Florida and Alabama. Getting here wasn’t easy: no bridges across the southern stretches of the Choctawhatchee River, just sandy trails.

In 1913, W.H. Butler and his son, Van, made the trip from DeFuniak Springs and became village champions. Butler had considered a resort at Phillips Inlet but found Grayton land for half the price. He bought much of what is now Grayton Beach. Half-price land. Full-price genius.

A QUIRKY, RUSTIC CHARM

Grayton’s artistic spirit draws everyone from families to artists and adventurers. Explore local galleries, the iconic Red Bar, and the Grayt Wall of Art. For a hands-on activity, The Shard Shop lets kids take a break from the sand. The local motto? “Nice Dogs, Strange People.” And at Grayton Beach Surf Club, you can learn to ride a wave, or at least look good trying.

Dr. Beach named Grayton Beach State Park America’s best beach in 2020. Follow trails through dunes and pine flatwoods, or kayak and paddleboard on Western Lake. With scenery, character, and approximately 47 ways to avoid checking your email, Grayton’s got it good.
