Planning a 30A trip is the fun part. But getting there? That’s where the confusion usually starts.
You’ve got three options for 2026, each within reasonable driving distance, each with its own tradeoffs. The right answer depends on where you’re flying from, when you’re going, and what you’re willing to compromise.
Here’s the quick and easy.
THE QUICK ANSWER

- ECP (Northwest Florida Beaches International) – Closest to 30A, easiest experience. Best for families and first-timers.
- VPS (Destin–Fort Walton Beach) – More flight options, often competitive pricing. Good for peak-season travelers.
- PNS (Pensacola International) – Sometimes the cheapest, especially from Midwest cities, but comes with a two-plus-hour drive.
ECP: NWF BEACHES INTERNATIONAL
The closest, smoothest, most convenient option.
If you value your time (and your sanity), fly into ECP. It’s our local “secret” that isn’t so secret anymore. You’ll land, grab your bags, and be pulling into your Oversee rental in under 30 minutes. It’s small, painless, and they’ve added a ton of direct flights from hubs like Atlanta, Dallas, and Nashville this year.
The Verdict: If you’ve got kids in tow, don’t even look elsewhere. If you’d rather spend time on the beach than in a rental car line, book it.
VPS: DESTIN–FORT WALTON BEACH
The best balance of options and price.
VPS is the workhorse of the Panhandle. It’s about 75 minutes away, but it often has more flight times and better prices if you’re traveling during the heat of July, which is also the time of the year when you can expect a bit of a wait at the rental car counter.
If you’re staying on the west end near Miramar Beach, this is actually a very smart move.
The Verdict: Check the fares here first if ECP looks pricey. It’s worth the extra hour of driving to save a few hundred bucks.
PNS: PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL
The budget option, if you don’t mind the drive.
It’s true, Pensacola is a haul: plan on two-plus hours. The tradeoff? For budget-conscious travelers, especially our friends flying from Midwest cities with weaker Panhandle service, the savings can be real.
The Verdict: Only do this for a long stay (10+ days) where the flight savings actually cover the extra gas and the lost time.
2026 THINGS WORTH KNOWING
The Rental Car Caution: A rental car is the right move for almost everyone, but book it the second you buy your plane tickets. Inventory in 2026 is still tight, and you don’t want to be stranded.
Ditch the Uber Idea: 30A isn’t a “rideshare” kind of place, and not built for public transit. You want a car to get here, but once you arrive, park it. Golf carts and bikes are the way to go. Most homes include them or have them available nearby. They’re great for the beach and the trail, just not an airport transfer strategy. It’s how you actually see the neighborhood.
HOW TO CHOOSE
- Traveling with kids or a group → ECP. Shorter drive, easier airport, less stress.
- Looking for the best fare → compare VPS and PNS. Run the same dates through all three.
- Staying on the west end of 30A → VPS may shave real time off the drive.
- Long trip on a budget → PNS might pencil out once you run the numbers.
FINAL CALL
ECP is the easiest choice. VPS is the most balanced. PNS is the bargain hunt.
