Everybody starts with the same plan. Get to the beach early, with a full cooler and big plans to stay all day until sunset.
But by 11:30, someone’s sunburned, somebody’s hungry, and the walk back feels twice as long as it did that morning.
So skip the marathon and replace it with one of our favorite pieces of 30A advice: Create two beach sessions, with a real break right in the middle, and watch the whole day get better. And easier.
GO EARLY
Morning is cooler and calmer. The sand is easier on bare feet, and everyone still has plenty of energy. Parking and beach access are often easier, too.
Get a few great hours in before the strongest sun arrives, then call it a win.
KNOW YOUR ACCESS FIRST
Circling for the right beach access with a packed car is nobody’s idea of fun. Figure it out before you leave: public or private, stairs or no stairs, wristbands or codes. Some accesses have restrooms or showers. Others don’t.
It varies more across 30A than people expect, so a few minutes of planning beats thirty minutes of frustration.
PACK LIGHT
The best beach bag isn’t the fullest one. It’s the easiest one to carry. Bring water, sunscreen, towels, hats, snacks, and the beach toys your kids will actually play with.
If your rental is a short walk away, pack even lighter. Going back for one forgotten item, like your swimsuit, beats hauling everything “just in case.”
SHADE ISN’T OPTIONAL
Set up your umbrella or shade as soon as you arrive, not after someone’s already pink. Wear a hat even under the umbrella. Drink water.
And remember, the Gulf breeze can make the sun feel less intense than it really is.
HEAD HOME FOR LUNCH
Some families treat leaving for lunch like admitting defeat. It’s actually the secret.
Head back to the house. Cool off. Eat something. Shower the sand away. Let younger kids nap. Jump in the pool. Stretch out on the couch for a while. A midday reset makes the second half of the day feel like a brand-new vacation.
GO BACK FOR THE GOOD PART
Come back later, and it almost feels like a different beach. The temperature eases up. The light softens. Everyone’s rested, fed, and ready for another swim or a walk along the shoreline.
Bring a smaller bag this time. Stay for sunset if you can.
Many families end up loving this second beach trip even more than the first.
LET THE FLAGS DECIDE
Always look at the beach flags before anyone gets in the water, and keep looking as the day goes on. If swimming isn’t advised, there’s still plenty to enjoy. Walk the shoreline. Hunt for shells. Read a book. Build a sandcastle. The beach is still worth the trip.
THE RIGHT RENTAL HELPS
Walkable beach access means fewer trips hauling gear. Complimentary bikes make quick ice cream runs easy. A private or community pool keeps the fun going after everyone leaves the sand. A golf cart is breezy, quick, and fun. Outdoor showers help keep half the beach from coming inside.
The small stuff ends up being what people remember most.
