Steven Quartly
Born in San Diego in 1971 and raised in Novato, California, Steven Quartly cherishes fond memories of his childhood. The elder of two children born to Janet and Christopher Quartly, he recalls happy times playing in the woods and trees with his sister Karyn. His mother was a homemaker, and his father owned a life insurance company and was also an artist. Steven found school challenging due to dyslexia, which led his parents to encourage him in the arts, specifically painting and music. He believes this was beneficial, stating that he learned creatively, not conventionally.
At 13, Steven began oil painting classes, primarily attended by older women. He found the dynamic enjoyable and studied traditional techniques for five years. His family converted a loft into a studio where he painted houses for neighbors and flowers for his sister. After high school, he lacked direction and enrolled at Santa Barbara College, studying art for two years. He then transferred to Azusa Pacific University, where he explored music, drama, and art, participating in the university choir and writing and playing guitar. He graduated with a B.A. in Fine Art, describing his life as a “miscellany of hobbies.”
Although painting wasn’t a priority in college, he learned to connect emotion with technique in his art, which is evident in his current work. Before graduating, he was honored with a commission to paint a 30-foot mural for the university’s Marshburn Memorial Library solarium. He eventually pursued a career as an artist, though he still enjoys writing and singing music. Steven has been painting full-time for about twelve years. Early on, it was difficult; he and his wife, Natalie, lived by the beach while he worked various jobs to make ends meet, painting in his spare time until he gained recognition. He describes himself as self-taught, focusing on scenes—European cities, Mediterranean seascapes, or California landscapes—that evoke romance and emotion. His inspiration comes from the joy of life, and he considers himself a romantic. He admires Tom Swimm for his use of colors, Rembrandt for his light application, Charles W. Mundy for movement in his impressionist plein air works, Howard Behrens, a fellow palette knife artist, and James Coleman for the romance in his paintings.
Steven also credits his grandfather, Eric Quartly, an engineer for San Diego and San Francisco, for his creative and positive influence. Eric, who met his wife Nancy (who arrived from England on the sister ship to the Titanic) in the US, also had a romantic air, perhaps reflected in Steven’s art. Steven has visited his English ancestors’ home in Devon, and England serves as the setting for several of his paintings. He paints scenes en plein air or recreates them from photographs and sketches inspired by his travels to Europe and England with Natalie. He has recently expanded his subjects to Hawaii and tropical regions. Natalie is crucial to their self-publishing business, handling distribution and working with galleries that display his oil paintings and hand-embellished giclées on canvas. Steven is deeply involved in the printmaking process, working with top US ateliers, color proofing, hand-embellishing, and applying coatings. He believes his direct involvement ensures quality and adds meaning, stating, “The more you remove the artist from the work, the more the meaning is lessened.”
Family life is important to Steven. He and Natalie have four children and live in North Tustin, California, near the Pacific Ocean, where Steven enjoys surfing a few mornings a week. He surfs alone or with friends, finding it an escape that keeps him mentally and physically healthy. By 8 a.m., he is back in his custom-built, light-filled studio on their property. Known for his prolificacy, completing up to 120 paintings annually, he works until 5 p.m., joins his family for dinner, and often continues painting into the night. While working, he listens to music, favoring classical composers like Bach and Schubert or romantic artists like Andrea Bocelli. He describes himself as a melancholic personality, which adds a mysterious quality to his paintings, yet he aims to convey happiness, joy, and hope. He believes artists have a duty to bring hope into the world, given the negativity. Religion is important to Steven; he attends church every Sunday and begins each day with prayer, expressing gratitude for his life and joys. He appreciates his freedom to pursue his passion and loves returning home after visiting other places. Quartly’s work is self-published through Quartly Fine Art.
