Legendary New Orleans Cocktails with Author Sue Strachan and Chef Michael Sichel
Alys Beach
Sue Strachan, author of The Café Brûlot, will present her new book, The Obituary Cocktail, alongside a Café Brûlot demonstration by Alys Beach Chef Michael Sichel. This complimentary event is intended to launch the week's Crafted spirits events. Strachan will share the stories behind the classic New Orleans cocktails, Café Brûlot and The Obituary Cocktail, while Chef Michael performs a dramatic, fiery demonstration of the Café Brûlot cocktail. The Obituary Cocktail is a blend of gin, vermouth, and absinthe, created to honor the funerary traditions rooted in New Orleans' hidden history of "secret societies, second-line parades, and celebrations of deathly holidays like Halloween and All Saints’ Day." The Café Brûlot highlights New Orleans' appreciation for the dramatic with a theatrical presentation that is as significant as the drink itself. The concoction includes coffee, brandy, sugar, cinnamon, lemon, oranges, cloves, and sometimes an orange liqueur. It is served in a special Brûlot cup and set on fire in a highly ceremonial preparation that requires specific tools and expertise. This "devilishly incendiary coffee," also known as Café Brûlot Diabolique, is a centuries-old legend continued by old-line New Orleans restaurants, including Antoine’s, Arnaud’s, Brennan’s, Broussard’s, Commander’s Palace, and Galatoire’s. This special “Crafted” version of NEAT’s weekly Wine & Song event is free and open to the public, featuring live music and opportunities to purchase The Obituary Cocktail and the Café Brûlot cocktail after the demonstration. Strachan’s books about these legendary cocktails and the related New Orleans history and cultural insights will be available for purchase, and she will be signing books from 5-7 PM.

A peer support group is available for breast cancer patients and survivors. It meets on the third Saturday of each month from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Walton County Coastal Branch Library, with a Zoom option also provided. The Fore Her Breast Cancer Support Group was established a year ago by founder Amy Walsh to offer a setting for women to discuss their fears, experiences, concerns, and needs while the organization provides resources. The group welcomes anyone affected by breast cancer. Ms. Walsh initially expressed the goal of bringing patients and survivors together to share their experiences, offer advice, listen, and learn about local resources that offer help and hope. The group continues to convene at 9:00 AM on the third Saturday of every month at the Coastal Branch Library in Santa Rosa Beach. Attendees are provided with resource pamphlets and books, including autobiographic and self-help/inspirational titles, free of charge. Breast cancer patients share their diagnoses with a supportive audience, and various treatments—ranging from surgery and radiation to chemotherapy and long-term medications—are discussed. The meetings are characterized by shared hugs and tears as supportive friendships are formed.

Legendary New Orleans Cocktails with Author Sue Strachan and Chef Michael Sichel
Alys Beach
NEAT Bottle Shop & Tasting Room
11 Castle Harbour Dr., Alys Beach
Tuesday, November 11, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
In 0 days
Sue Strachan, author of The Café Brûlot, will present her new book, The Obituary Cocktail, alongside a Café Brûlot demonstration by Alys Beach Chef Michael Sichel. This complimentary event is intended to launch the week’s Crafted spirits events. Strachan will share the stories behind the classic New Orleans cocktails, Café Brûlot and The Obituary Cocktail, while Chef Michael performs a dramatic, fiery demonstration of the Café Brûlot cocktail.
The Obituary Cocktail is a blend of gin, vermouth, and absinthe, created to honor the funerary traditions rooted in New Orleans’ hidden history of “secret societies, second-line parades, and celebrations of deathly holidays like Halloween and All Saints’ Day.”
The Café Brûlot highlights New Orleans’ appreciation for the dramatic with a theatrical presentation that is as significant as the drink itself. The concoction includes coffee, brandy, sugar, cinnamon, lemon, oranges, cloves, and sometimes an orange liqueur. It is served in a special Brûlot cup and set on fire in a highly ceremonial preparation that requires specific tools and expertise. This “devilishly incendiary coffee,” also known as Café Brûlot Diabolique, is a centuries-old legend continued by old-line New Orleans restaurants, including Antoine’s, Arnaud’s, Brennan’s, Broussard’s, Commander’s Palace, and Galatoire’s.
