Yes, the beaches are incredible. But here’s the thing: 30A has even more going on behind the dunes. Think rare coastal lakes, wildlife-packed trails, and landscapes that feel surprisingly untouched.
And it’s all tucked (and preserved!) inside some of the most beautiful, visitor-friendly state parks in Florida. Ready to explore the wilder side of 30A? Toss a paddleboard in the car, pack a few snacks, and let’s roll.
WHAT MAKES 30A’S LANDSCAPE SO COOL?
SUGAR-WHITE SAND DUNES

They’re soft, they’re sparkly, and they’re made almost entirely of quartz. These towering dunes help protect the inland ecosystems, support local wildlife, and make every hike feel a little more cinematic.
COASTAL DUNE LAKES

Found in only a few places on Earth (yes, really), these freshwater lakes sit just steps from the Gulf. Every so often, they open up to the ocean, creating a one-of-a-kind mix of salt and fresh water. It’s part science, part magic, and totally 30A.
THINGS TO DO (THAT DON’T INVOLVE A BEACH CHAIR)
30A’s state parks are packed with ways to stretch your legs, fill your lungs, and maybe spot a gator or a great blue heron.
- Hiking & Biking: From boardwalk strolls to shady forest trails.
- Paddling & Kayaking: Cruise across calm dune lakes or along quiet bayous.
- Wildlife Watching: Bring your binoculars. This place is bird central.
- Camping, Fishing, Picnicking: You know what to do.
Need gear? Local outfitters like Vacayzen and La Dolce Vita will hook you up with bikes, boards, coolers—whatever your outdoor agenda requires.
Park Info. Most parks are open from 8 AM to sunset every day. Fees are usually $4–$6 per vehicle, and you’ll find everything from restrooms and picnic tables to kayak launches and campgrounds.
Smart Tips
- Pack water like you’re crossing the desert
- Sunscreen. Again, sunscreen
- Respect the trails (and the gopher tortoises)
- Leave only footprints, take only phone pics
THE LINEUP. 30A’S BEST STATE PARKS.
GRAYTON BEACH STATE PARK

If this place had a fan club, we’d join. It’s got Gulf access, trails, and Western Lake for kayaking. Oh… the park is home to the world’s first permanent Underwater Museum of Art. Yes, really.
Do this: Swimming, fishing, paddling, biking, camping, and wildlife gawking.
TOPSAIL HILL PRESERVE STATE PARK
With some of the tallest dunes in Florida and three stunning coastal dune lakes, this one feels like you’re walking through a Florida nature documentary. It’s a haven for birdwatchers and hikers, with over 15 miles of trails through pine forests, wetlands, and sandhill habitats.
Bonus: Some of the best trails around.
Do this: Hike, bike, birdwatch, camp, repeat.
DEER LAKE STATE PARK
A peaceful and long boardwalk takes you through delicate dune ecosystems and ends at a quiet beach. No crowds, just you, the breeze, and maybe a plover (tiny birds that skitter across the sand) or two.
Do this: Hike, stroll, breathe deep, snap pics.
CAMP HELEN STATE PARK

Part beach, part forest, part historic hideaway, the park is surrounded by water on three sides. Between the lodge, the lake, and the trails, this park packs a lot into its scenic little footprint.
Do this: Kayak on Lake Powell, fish, hike, or wander through the old lodge like you’re in a southern fairy tale.
EDEN GARDENS STATE PARK
This one’s a change of pace, in the best way. Bring a picnic and channel your inner Southern novelist. The live oaks, rose gardens, and the 1890s Wesley House give this park a whole different vibe.
Do this: Tour the house, stroll the grounds, watch the sun sparkle off Tucker Bayou.
POINT WASHINGTON STATE FOREST

Think of this as your trail-filled playground. With more than 15,000 acres, it’s a favorite among bikers, trail runners, and anyone who likes the idea of getting (safely) lost in the woods. Includes both casual loops and longer backcountry treks.
Do this: Trail ride, hike, or just wander and see what you find.
BEFORE YOU GO…
Here’s what we’d throw in the backpack:
- Reusable water bottles
- Sunscreen (yes, again)
- Bug spray
- Comfy shoes
- Snacks that don’t melt
- A sense of adventure
Respect the Wild. Follow park rules. Stay on trails. Don’t pet the wildlife (even if it’s really cute). And check if you need a permit for fishing or overnight camping.
