Legendary New Orleans Cocktails with Author Sue Strachan and Chef Michael Sichel

Alys Beach
Food & Drink Food & Drink

Sue Strachan, author of The Café Brûlot, will present her new book, The Obituary Cocktail, alongside a Café Brûlot demonstration by Alys Beach Chef Michael Sichel. This complimentary event is intended to launch the week's Crafted spirits events. Strachan will share the stories behind the classic New Orleans cocktails, Café Brûlot and The Obituary Cocktail, while Chef Michael performs a dramatic, fiery demonstration of the Café Brûlot cocktail. The Obituary Cocktail is a blend of gin, vermouth, and absinthe, created to honor the funerary traditions rooted in New Orleans' hidden history of "secret societies, second-line parades, and celebrations of deathly holidays like Halloween and All Saints’ Day." The Café Brûlot highlights New Orleans' appreciation for the dramatic with a theatrical presentation that is as significant as the drink itself. The concoction includes coffee, brandy, sugar, cinnamon, lemon, oranges, cloves, and sometimes an orange liqueur. It is served in a special Brûlot cup and set on fire in a highly ceremonial preparation that requires specific tools and expertise. This "devilishly incendiary coffee," also known as Café Brûlot Diabolique, is a centuries-old legend continued by old-line New Orleans restaurants, including Antoine’s, Arnaud’s, Brennan’s, Broussard’s, Commander’s Palace, and Galatoire’s. This special “Crafted” version of NEAT’s weekly Wine & Song event is free and open to the public, featuring live music and opportunities to purchase The Obituary Cocktail and the Café Brûlot cocktail after the demonstration. Strachan’s books about these legendary cocktails and the related New Orleans history and cultural insights will be available for purchase, and she will be signing books from 5-7 PM.

We loved our stay at Southern Comfort! We had 4 adults and 3 kids and had more than ample space for all of us to spread out. The kids loved the pool and having a golf cart to drive the short drive back and forth to the beach and restaurants is so convenient! The place was super clean and stocked with anything you could need. Kids loved the pool! We love staying in this area but this is by far our favorite place we’ve stayed so far!

We enjoyed our stay and loved having our own private pool and all the amenities with this home. The beach was easy access and able to walk, ride bikes, or drive the golf cart esp if carrying chairs. The house had chairs and beach toys in the garage which was an added bonus for all of us. We loved the area. We were a total of 9 people aged 10- 60. We couldn’tHave easily had another family with us. I also loved the app that the managing property sent us with locations of restaurants and things to do. The teenagers were ableTo drive the golf cart to Seasode and loved doing that .

This is our second time renting through Oversee and the house was even nicer than we expected. The kitchen was well equipped for a large group, especially the huge refrigerator and all the counter space and the island for dining which left the actual dining table free for games. It’s a lovely house with plenty of space to spread out and everything was in great condition. We knew the pool was small but the grandkids loved it and it was so convenient to have it right there. The golf cart was also very convenient, although the beach is in walking distance if you’re not carrying a lot of gear. Staffing for housekeeping is still a problem but this year the house was ready by 5. Oversee responded right away to a minor problem and we would definitely rent from them again.

Wow! This home is beautifully designed and was surprisingly spacious. We appreciate the attention to detail like soft close drawers and cabinets, shower wands and tons of storage. The pool is a bit smaller than expected but that was easily offset by the unexpected high ceiling and spacious layout. The house is clean, the beds and furniture are comfortable. I was overjoyed to find a powerful vacuum tucked away into a closet for those times when the kids bring too much sand back from the beach. Oh and the chef’s kitchen is amazing! The property managers responded QUICKLY to any concerns or questions I had and even sent DirectTV out to troubleshoot an issue with the outdoor TV remote. The location is perfect, close to everything but secluded enough to avoid 30a’s traffic. The neighborhood is quiet (even with ongoing construction) and plenty of parking available. We fit 4 vehicles (3 suvs, 1 coupe) easily. We’re definitely adding this house to our “revisit” list of beach homes.

This place is absolutely beautiful. The location is perfect to get to the beach, grocery store, and restaurants in less than 5 minutes. The kitchen is a chefs dream not to mention the large refrigerator that’s large enough to store food for a month! The beds were amazing, the pool was heated ( extra charge), the place was very clean with lots of towels. We will be back next year.

We were honored to be the first renters of this fabulous property and I can’t say enough good things. The location is quiet and the beach is just a few minutes away by golf cart. There was room for our entire party to spread out or come together as we liked. The house is stunning and well appointed. It is a design magazine come to life. The owners provided a book with instructions on all of the amenities, recommendations on local restaurants, and even menus. Oversee was excellent and I wouldn’t rent from anywhere else. Can’t imagine staying anywhere else in the future.
