Steven Quartly
Born in San Diego in 1971 and raised in Novato, California, Steven Quartly cherishes his childhood memories. The older of two children to Janet and Christopher Quartly, Steven recalls joyful times playing in the woods with his sister, Karyn. His mother was a homemaker, and his father owned a life insurance company and was an artist at heart. Steven struggled in school due to dyslexia, which led his parents to encourage him in the arts, particularly painting and music. He believes this was beneficial, stating that he learned differently, on a creative level, which is a valuable lesson for those who struggle in traditional schooling.
At 13, Steven began oil painting classes, primarily attended by older women artists. He found the dynamic enjoyable, as the teacher made an exception for him to join the adult-only class. For five years, he honed his skills in traditional painting techniques. A loft in his family home was converted into a studio where he painted houses for neighbors and flowers for his sister. Upon graduating high school, Steven felt directionless. He enrolled at Santa Barbara College, funding two years of art courses. He later transferred to Azusa Pacific University, where he pursued his interests in music, drama, and art, participating in the university choir and writing and playing guitar. He earned a B.A. in Fine Art, describing his life as a “miscellany of hobbies.”
Though painting wasn’t his main focus in college, his studies helped him connect emotion with technique in his art, a depth of feeling evident in his current work. Before graduating, he was commissioned to paint a 30-foot mural for the university’s Marshburn Memorial Library solarium. Steven ultimately chose to pursue a career as an artist, though he still enjoys writing music and singing. He has been painting full-time for about twelve years. Early on, challenges arose. He and his wife, Natalie, married for ten years, lived in a beach apartment while Steven worked various jobs, including in a surf shop, a coffee shop, running deliveries for a frame shop, and even painting mailboxes to make ends meet. He painted in his spare time until his work gradually gained recognition. Describing himself as largely self-taught, Steven focuses on capturing romance and emotion in his scenes, whether they are European cities, Mediterranean seascapes, or California landscapes. His inspiration stems from the joy of life, and he considers himself a romantic. Painters who have influenced him include Tom Swimm for his use of colors, Rembrandt for his light-on-dark application, and Charles W. Mundy for the movement in his impressionistic plein air works, especially his “mixing on the canvas.” He also admires fellow palette knife artist Howard Behrens and James Coleman for the romance in his paintings.
Steven also credits his grandfather, Eric Quartly, for his positive influence and creativity. Eric, an engineer for San Diego and San Francisco, was a creative and influential individual with a romantic aura, perhaps reflected in Steven’s paintings. Eric met his future wife, Nancy, who was visiting from England on the sister ship to the Titanic. They waited a year for Nancy’s family to approve her return to marry Eric. Steven has visited his English ancestors’ home in Devon, and England serves as the setting for several of his paintings. He paints scenes Plein Air or recreates them from his photographs and sketches, inspired by his travels to Europe and England with Natalie. He has expanded his artistic scope to include works set in Hawaii and tropical regions. He acknowledges Natalie’s crucial role in managing his self-publishing business, as she handles distribution and works with galleries displaying his oil paintings and hand-embellished giclées on canvas. Steven is deeply involved in the printmaking process, working with top ateliers in the US, performing color proofing, hand-embellishing, and applying coatings. He explains that he hasn’t found an assistant who can meet his standards for prints, and his personal involvement in quality has become a significant selling point for galleries, as he believes removing the artist from the work lessens its meaning.
Family life is important to Steven. He and Natalie have four children and reside in North Tustin, CA, near the Pacific Ocean, where Steven enjoys surfing. A few mornings a week, he rises at 5 a.m. to surf alone or with friends, finding it an escape that maintains his mental and physical well-being. By 8 a.m., he returns home to his studio, a light-filled space custom-built on their property with Natalie. Known for his prolificacy, completing up to 120 paintings annually, he works until 5 p.m., joining his family for dinner before often returning to paint into the night. While working, he listens to music, favoring classical composers like Bach and Schubert, or romantic artists such as Andrea Bocelli. He describes himself as a somewhat melancholic personality, which lends a touch of mystery to his paintings, yet he aims to convey happiness, joy, and hope. Steven believes artists have a duty to bring hope into a world with much negativity. Religion is central to his life; he attends church every Sunday and begins each day with prayer, expressing gratitude for God’s blessings and daily joys. He is thankful for his home and the freedom to pursue his passion, and while he enjoys visiting other places, he loves returning home. Quartly’s work is self-published through Quartly Fine Art.
