Steven Quartly
Steven Quartly, born in San Diego in 1971 and raised in Novato, California, cherishes fond memories of his childhood. As the eldest of two children to Janet, a homemaker, and Christopher Quartly, a life insurance company owner and artist, Steven recalls happy times playing in the woods and trees with his sister Karyn. School, however, was challenging for Steven due to dyslexia, which led his parents to encourage him in the arts, specifically painting and music. He found this beneficial, stating, “Most people think if kids don’t do well in school, they don’t have a future. But I just learned differently, I learned on a creative level.”
At 13, Steven began oil painting classes, primarily attended by older women. He found the dynamic enjoyable, studying for five years and learning traditional techniques. A loft in his family home was converted into a studio, where he painted houses for neighbors and flowers for his sister. Upon high school graduation, Steven felt undirected. He enrolled at Santa Barbara College, studying art for two years, then transferred to Azusa Pacific University near Pasadena, where he explored music, drama, and art. He participated in the university choir, played guitar, and wrote music, graduating with a B.A. in Fine Art. He described this period as his life being “filled with a miscellany of hobbies.”
Despite painting not being a priority in college, his studies helped him connect emotion with technique in his art, which is evident in his current work. Before graduating, he was commissioned to paint a 30-foot mural for the university’s Marshburn Memorial Library solarium. Steven eventually pursued a career as an artist, though he still enjoys writing and singing music. He has been painting full-time for about twelve years. Initially, it was difficult; he and his wife, Natalie, lived in a beach apartment while Steven worked various jobs, including in a surf shop, coffee shop, and delivering for a frame shop, even painting mailboxes to support himself. He painted in his free time until he gained recognition. Describing himself as largely self-taught, Steven focuses on capturing romance and emotion in scenes of European cities, Mediterranean seascapes, and California landscapes. His inspiration stems from the joy of life. He states, “I have always enjoyed being a romantic.” Painters who have influenced him include Tom Swimm for color use, Rembrandt for light application on dark, Charles W. Mundy for movement in impressionist plein air works, Howard Behrens, a fellow palette knife artist, and James Coleman for infusing romance into his paintings.
Steven also credits his grandfather, Eric Quartly, an engineer for San Diego and San Francisco, for his positive influence and creativity. Eric, a creative and influential individual, exuded a romantic aura, perhaps reflected in Steven’s art. Eric met his future wife, Nancy, who was visiting from England on a sister ship to the Titanic. They waited a year for Nancy’s family’s permission to marry. Steven has visited his English ancestors’ home in Devon, which serves as a setting for several of his paintings. His scenes are painted en plein air or recreated from photographs and sketches inspired by his travels in Europe and England with Natalie. He has expanded his scope to include works set in Hawaii and tropical regions. He acknowledges Natalie’s vital role in managing his self-publishing business, as she handles distribution and works with galleries showcasing his oil paintings and hand-embellished giclées on canvas. Steven is deeply involved in the printmaking process, working with top ateliers in the US, performing color proofing, hand-embellishing, and applying coatings. He explains, “I have not been able to find an assistant who can do what I want to the prints. And, in fact, it has proved a great selling point for galleries that I am so involved in the quality. The more you remove the artist from the work, the more the meaning is lessened.”
Family life is significant to Steven. He and Natalie have four children and reside in North Tustin, CA, near the Pacific Ocean, where Steven enjoys surfing. Several mornings a week, he rises at 5 a.m. to surf, either alone or with friends. He says, “I have surfed for years. It is my escape. I am healthy mentally and physically when surfing.” By 8 a.m., he is home in his custom-built, light-filled studio. Known for his prolificacy, completing up to 120 paintings annually, he works until 5 p.m., joins his family for dinner, and often returns to paint into the night. While working, he listens to music, favoring classics like Bach or Schubert, or the romance of Andrea Bocelli. Steven admits, “I do tend to be a melancholy type of personality, so there is a little bit of mystery to my paintings. Yet, I want to convey a happy feeling-joy and hope. There is a lot of negativity in the world and, as an artist; I believe we have a duty to bring hope into people’s lives.” Religion is important to Steven. He states, “We go to church every Sunday, and I try to start each day with a prayer, giving thanks for what God has given me and the joys I experience every day. I am thankful to live where I am, free to do what I love. As much as I enjoy visiting other places, I love coming home.” Quartly’s work is self-published through Quartly Fine Art.
