Steven Quartly
Born in San Diego in 1971 and growing up in Novato, California, Steven Quartly has fond memories of his childhood. The eldest of two children, his mother was a homemaker and his father owned a life insurance company and was also an artist. Steven remembers happy times playing with his sister Karyn in the woods and trees near their home. School was difficult for Steven due to dyslexia, so his parents encouraged him in painting and music, which he found beneficial. He believes that not doing well in traditional schooling doesn’t mean a lack of future, but rather a different way of learning creatively.
At 13, Steven began oil painting classes, primarily attended by older women. He found the dynamic with them enjoyable and studied traditional techniques for five years. A loft at his family home became his studio where he painted houses for neighbors and flowers for his sister. After high school, feeling directionless, he enrolled at Santa Barbara College to study art for two years. He later transferred to Azusa Pacific University, where he pursued music, drama, and art, participating in the university choir and playing guitar. He graduated with a B.A. in Fine Art, considering his life at that point filled with various hobbies.
Although painting wasn’t a priority in college, he learned to connect emotion with technique in his art, which is evident in his current work. Before graduating, he was commissioned to paint a 30-foot mural for the university’s Marshburn Memorial Library solarium. He eventually decided to become a full-time artist, though he still enjoys writing music and singing. He has been painting professionally for about twelve years. Early on, it was challenging; he and his wife Natalie, married for ten years, lived by the beach while Steven worked various jobs to make ends meet, painting in his spare time until he gained recognition. Steven, largely self-taught, focuses on painting scenes that evoke romance and emotion, such as European cities, Mediterranean seascapes, and California landscapes. His inspiration comes from the joy of life, and he describes himself as a romantic. He is influenced by painters like Tom Swimm for colors, Rembrandt for light application, Charles W. Mundy for movement in his impressionist works, Howard Behrens, and James Coleman for infusing romance into his paintings.
He also credits his grandfather, Eric Quartly, an engineer, for his positive and creative influence. Eric had a romantic aura, which might be echoed in Steven’s paintings. Eric met his future wife, Nancy, who was visiting from England on the sister ship to the Titanic. They waited a year for Nancy’s family’s permission to marry. Steven has visited his English ancestors’ home in Devon, and England serves as the setting for several of his paintings. He paints en plein air, or recreates scenes from his photographs and sketches, inspired by his travels in Europe and England with Natalie. He has expanded his scope to include Hawaii and tropical regions in his works. Natalie is crucial to his self-publishing business, managing distribution and working with galleries that display his oil paintings and hand-embellished giclées on canvas. Steven is deeply involved in the printmaking process, color proofing, hand-embellishing, and applying coatings. He states that he hasn’t found an assistant who can meet his standards for prints, and his involvement in quality has become a significant selling point for galleries, as he believes removing the artist from the work lessens its meaning.
Family life is important to Steven. He and Natalie have four children and live in North Tustin, California, close to the Pacific Ocean, where Steven enjoys surfing. He often surfs alone or with friends early in the morning, considering it his escape and vital for his mental and physical health. By 8 a.m., he is back in his custom-built studio, a space filled with light. Known for his prolific output of up to 120 paintings a year, he works until 5 p.m., joins his family for dinner, and often returns to paint into the night. While working, he listens to classical music, with Bach and Schubert as favorites, or romantic music by artists like Andrea Bocelli. He describes himself as a melancholy personality, which adds a touch of mystery to his paintings, but he aims to convey happiness, joy, and hope. He believes artists have a duty to bring hope into the world amidst negativity. Religion is important to Steven; he attends church every Sunday and starts each day with prayer, giving thanks for his life and daily joys. He appreciates his freedom to pursue his passion and loves returning home after visiting other places. Quartly’s work is self-published through Quartly Fine Art.

Steven Quartly
Born in San Diego in 1971 and raised in Novato, California, Steven Quartly cherishes his childhood memories. The older of two children to Janet and Christopher Quartly, Steven recalls joyful times playing in the woods with his sister, Karyn. His mother was a homemaker, and his father owned a life insurance company and was an artist at heart. Steven struggled in school due to dyslexia, which led his parents to encourage him in the arts, particularly painting and music. He believes this was beneficial, stating that he learned differently, on a creative level, which is a valuable lesson for those who struggle in traditional schooling.
At 13, Steven began oil painting classes, primarily attended by older women artists. He found the dynamic enjoyable, as the teacher made an exception for him to join the adult-only class. For five years, he honed his skills in traditional painting techniques. A loft in his family home was converted into a studio where he painted houses for neighbors and flowers for his sister. Upon graduating high school, Steven felt directionless. He enrolled at Santa Barbara College, funding two years of art courses. He later transferred to Azusa Pacific University, where he pursued his interests in music, drama, and art, participating in the university choir and writing and playing guitar. He earned a B.A. in Fine Art, describing his life as a “miscellany of hobbies.”
Though painting wasn’t his main focus in college, his studies helped him connect emotion with technique in his art, a depth of feeling evident in his current work. Before graduating, he was commissioned to paint a 30-foot mural for the university’s Marshburn Memorial Library solarium. Steven ultimately chose to pursue a career as an artist, though he still enjoys writing music and singing. He has been painting full-time for about twelve years. Early on, challenges arose. He and his wife, Natalie, married for ten years, lived in a beach apartment while Steven worked various jobs, including in a surf shop, a coffee shop, running deliveries for a frame shop, and even painting mailboxes to make ends meet. He painted in his spare time until his work gradually gained recognition. Describing himself as largely self-taught, Steven focuses on capturing romance and emotion in his scenes, whether they are European cities, Mediterranean seascapes, or California landscapes. His inspiration stems from the joy of life, and he considers himself a romantic. Painters who have influenced him include Tom Swimm for his use of colors, Rembrandt for his light-on-dark application, and Charles W. Mundy for the movement in his impressionistic plein air works, especially his “mixing on the canvas.” He also admires fellow palette knife artist Howard Behrens and James Coleman for the romance in his paintings.
Steven also credits his grandfather, Eric Quartly, for his positive influence and creativity. Eric, an engineer for San Diego and San Francisco, was a creative and influential individual with a romantic aura, perhaps reflected in Steven’s paintings. Eric met his future wife, Nancy, who was visiting from England on the sister ship to the Titanic. They waited a year for Nancy’s family to approve her return to marry Eric. Steven has visited his English ancestors’ home in Devon, and England serves as the setting for several of his paintings. He paints scenes Plein Air or recreates them from his photographs and sketches, inspired by his travels to Europe and England with Natalie. He has expanded his artistic scope to include works set in Hawaii and tropical regions. He acknowledges Natalie’s crucial role in managing his self-publishing business, as she handles distribution and works with galleries displaying his oil paintings and hand-embellished giclées on canvas. Steven is deeply involved in the printmaking process, working with top ateliers in the US, performing color proofing, hand-embellishing, and applying coatings. He explains that he hasn’t found an assistant who can meet his standards for prints, and his personal involvement in quality has become a significant selling point for galleries, as he believes removing the artist from the work lessens its meaning.
Family life is important to Steven. He and Natalie have four children and reside in North Tustin, CA, near the Pacific Ocean, where Steven enjoys surfing. A few mornings a week, he rises at 5 a.m. to surf alone or with friends, finding it an escape that maintains his mental and physical well-being. By 8 a.m., he returns home to his studio, a light-filled space custom-built on their property with Natalie. Known for his prolificacy, completing up to 120 paintings annually, he works until 5 p.m., joining his family for dinner before often returning to paint into the night. While working, he listens to music, favoring classical composers like Bach and Schubert, or romantic artists such as Andrea Bocelli. He describes himself as a somewhat melancholic personality, which lends a touch of mystery to his paintings, yet he aims to convey happiness, joy, and hope. Steven believes artists have a duty to bring hope into a world with much negativity. Religion is central to his life; he attends church every Sunday and begins each day with prayer, expressing gratitude for God’s blessings and daily joys. He is thankful for his home and the freedom to pursue his passion, and while he enjoys visiting other places, he loves returning home. Quartly’s work is self-published through Quartly Fine Art.

Steven Quartly
Steven Quartly was born in San Diego in 1971 and grew up in Novato, California. He cherishes fond memories of his childhood, playing in the woods and trees with his sister Karyn. His parents, Janet and Christopher Quartly, encouraged his artistic pursuits in painting and music due to his struggles with dyslexia in school. He notes that he “learned differently” on a creative level.
At 13, he enrolled in an oil painting class primarily attended by older women. He found the dynamic enjoyable and studied there for five years, mastering traditional techniques. A loft in his family home became his studio where he painted houses for neighbors and flowers for his sister. After high school, feeling directionless, he studied art at Santa Barbara College for two years before transferring to Azusa Pacific University to pursue music, drama, and art. He participated in the university choir and also played guitar and wrote music, earning a B.A. in Fine Art. He described his life as “filled with a miscellany of hobbies.”
Although painting wasn’t a priority during college, his studies helped him connect emotion with technique in his artwork. Before graduating, he was commissioned to paint a 30-foot mural for the university’s Marshburn Memorial Library solarium. He eventually decided to pursue a career as an artist, though he still enjoys writing and singing music. He has been a full-time painter for about twelve years, facing initial challenges. He and his wife, Natalie, lived by the beach while Steven worked various jobs to make ends meet, painting in his spare time until his work gained recognition. Steven, largely self-taught, paints scenes of European cities, Mediterranean seascapes, or California landscapes that evoke romance and emotion. His inspiration stems from the joy of life. He describes himself as a romantic and admires painters like Tom Swimm for his use of colors, Rembrandt for his light application, Charles W. Mundy for movement in his impressionist plein air works, Howard Behrens, and James Coleman for the romance in his paintings.
He attributes his positive influence and creativity to his grandfather, Eric Quartly, an engineer for San Diego and San Francisco, who was a creative and influential person with a romantic air. Eric met his wife, Nancy, who was visiting from England on a sister ship to the Titanic. They waited a year for Nancy’s family’s permission to marry. Steven has visited his English ancestors’ home in Devon, which serves as a setting for some of his paintings. He paints scenes en plein air or recreates them from photographs and sketches, inspired by his travels to Europe and England with Natalie. He has expanded his artistic horizons to include works set in Hawaii and tropical regions. He credits Natalie as instrumental in running his self-publishing business, as she manages distribution and works with galleries showcasing his oil paintings and hand-embellished giclées on canvas. Steven is deeply involved in the printmaking process, working with top ateliers in the US, performing color proofing, hand-embellishing, and applying coatings. He explains that he has not found an assistant who can meet his standards for prints, and his involvement in quality has become a significant selling point for galleries, as he believes that removing the artist from the work diminishes its meaning.
Family life is important to Steven. He and Natalie have four children, and their home is in North Tustin, California, near the Pacific Ocean, where Steven enjoys surfing. A few mornings a week, he surfs at 5 a.m., alone or with friends, finding it an escape that maintains his mental and physical health. By 8 a.m., he is back in his custom-built studio, filled with light, on their property. Known for his prolificacy, completing up to 120 paintings a year, he works until 5 p.m., joining his family for dinner, often returning to paint into the night. While working, he listens to music, favoring classics like Bach or Schubert, or the romance of Andrea Bocelli. He admits to a “melancholy type of personality,” which adds a touch of mystery to his paintings, yet he aims to convey happiness, joy, and hope. He believes artists have a duty to bring hope into a world with much negativity. Religion is significant to Steven; he attends church every Sunday and begins each day with prayer, expressing gratitude for God’s blessings and daily joys. He is thankful for his home and the freedom to pursue his passion, and while he enjoys visiting other places, he loves returning home. Quartly’s work is self-published through Quartly Fine Art.

The elder of two children born to Janet and Christopher Quartly, he recalls happy times playing in the woods and trees with his sister Karyn. His mother was a homemaker, and his father owned a life insurance company and was also an artist. Steven found school challenging due to dyslexia, which led his parents to encourage him in the arts, specifically painting and music. Family life is important to Steven. He and Natalie have four children and live in North Tustin, California, near the Pacific Ocean, where Steven enjoys surfing a few mornings a week. He surfs alone or with friends, finding it an escape that keeps him mentally and physically healthy. By 8 a.m., he is back in his custom-built, light-filled studio on their property.
